Inaugurated in 1986, the International Conference on Modern Industrial Training (CMIT) is a triennial event jointly organized by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and a key university in Mainland China with the aims of serving as a platform for reviewing and exchanging ideas and experience in modern industrial training, and to promote the importance of intellectually challenging, relevant industrial training as an integral part of higher education.
The first conference was held in Guangzhou in 1986 and hosted by South China University of Technology, then successively in Nanjing , Wuhan , Xi’an , Jinan , Beijing and Chongqing . Again in collaboration with South China University of Technology, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University will host the eighth conference in Hong Kong in October 2006.
The theme of the 8CMIT is “Technology Training Initiatives– Challenges of Modern Industrial Training”. The programme centres on aspects of innovative initiatives in the training and transfer of technologies to both young and mature students to meet the emerging needs of modern industry, particularly in the following areas:
- The training needs of the workforce for modern industry
- Innovative industrial training methodologies, paradigms and practices
- Challenges for teaching and training professionals in modern industry
- Infrastructure and management of training bases, and the sharing of training resources
- Continuing professional development and advanced training
- Professional training in environmental safety and health
In addition to the regular 8CMIT sessions, there will be a one-day pre-conference workshop on “Management and Implementation of an Industrial Centre”. The workshop provides attendees with an overview of the path that Industrial Centre at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University has gone through in the past thirty years and its way forward in administering an effective training centre.

The working language of the Conference is English that will be used for all printed materials, presentations and discussions. The pre-conference workshop will be conducted in English supplemented with Putonghua.
The opening ceremony and the technical sessions of the Conference will be held in The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong SAR, China .

Hong Kong 's climate is subtropical. October is a pleasant month to visit the city, with an average temperature and humidity of 25°C and 65%.
The early bird rate of the Conference registration fee will be US$450 per delegate for payments made before 10 May 2006, and the regular rate of US$500 will apply thereafter. The fee includes the Welcome Reception, 3 lunches, the Conference Banquet, the social programmes and a copy of Conference Proceedings.
The fee for an accompanying guest, who will not attend the Conference, is US$150 that covers the reception, Conference Banquet and the social programmes. For the accompanying guest who would like to attend the Conference, the full registration fee applies.
The fee for the pre-conference workshop will be US$250 which includes the workshop handouts, the presentation materials and a lunch.
Hong Kong is one of the busiest and most important cities in terms of aviation and is supported by a highly efficient and convenient transportation network and one of the most reliable airports in the world. An average of more than 650 aircraft from more than 140 locations around the world take off and land every day. The 8CMIT Secretariat is available to offer advice to participants on their flight planning and arrangements.
Accommodation has been reserved near the Conference venue. Full details will be available in due course.
